Building a sustainable tomorrow BAM UK & Ireland is recruiting a Legal Counsel to join our Legal Services team in Scotland. You will be working across the Civil engineering division on BAM Working as a member of the Legal Centre of Expertise, the job holder is responsible for providing responsive, pragmatic and cost effective legal advice in order to optimize the management of legal risk for the business, including the management of external counsel. The position can be based from any of our UK office locations and we fully support periods of remote working, however you will need experience with Scottish law. Your mission Legal Counsel will be responsible for the successful provision of legal services. Construction • Participate as a member of construction tendering and project teams. • Advise on main contract, subcontract and supply chain contract risk including drafting and negotiating contract amendments. • Draft and amend bespoke and standard contracts including the preparation and updating of precedent contracts for the business. • Review and advise on technical contract documents such as specifications and procedures and influence their development to ensure optimum legal efficacy of contracts as a whole. • Advise on options in respect of, and conduct resolution of claims and disputes, including agreeing negotiating strategies with the business and conducting negotiations either as part of a client led team or direct with solicitors acting for customers, contractors and suppliers. General Commercial • Draft and amend bespoke and precedent commercial contracts • Participate in guidance and training for the business on general and topical legal matters relevant to the company. • Provide advice on general commercial matters relating to the business of the company, such as; o Health, Safety, Environmental and Sustainability Laws o Procurement and Competition Laws o Intellectual Property Rights Legal Counsel will need these competencies in order to deliver the business goals: • Customer Service Orientation • Information Seeking • Analytical Thinking • Concern for Order and Quality • Impact & Influence • Initiative • Teamwork Being personally accountable to your Line Manager for: • Successfully delivering the matters for which the role holder is responsible as set out below. • Adopting and promoting BAM s Vision and Values. • Supporting delivery of the BAM UK & Ireland Strategic Goals and Targets. • Taking ownership of assigned work and making decisions within boundaries set by the job holder s line manager. • Managing and utilising time to meet agreed objectives for allocated tasks. • Working collaboratively with Legal Shared Services and Legal Business Partners. Who are we looking for? The following are mandatory requirements: • A solicitor with at least 2 years post qualification experience, or a barrister with equivalent experience. • Experience of dispute resolution and/or commercial contracts drafting relevant to fields of expertise. • Ability to obtain clients instructions and articulate advice clearly and concisely. • Must be able to work with a minimum of supervision. • Able to prioritise their workload effectively, working to tight deadlines under pressure. • The job holder will be an excellent communicator who has the ability to solve problems.
