WORKING PATTERN: Our work style is hybrid, which involves spending at least two days per week, or 40% of our time, at one of our office sites (Edinburgh).

In this role you’ll help shape the future of our Payments Architecture, using innovative technology, cloud hosting and modernising our payments platform.

About this opportunity

We’re looking for a Solution Architect who has a background in Design Engineering / Application Design to join our Domestic Lab in our Payment Services Platform. Our mission is to provide compliant and efficient payments capabilities for the Group and drive innovation to enable customers to move money confidently, quickly and securely.

In joining us you’ll focus on the following:

  • Deliver business value by delivering reliable, scalable, and working software to production.
  • Ensure platforms and services are built consistently with industry best practice and standards.
  • Be responsible for the domain application stack, understanding application integration and E2E flow, and be comfortable communicating this at all levels, from the business design down to root-cause analysis with engineers/ developers
  • Evaluate and recommend technology stack and tools.
  • Work with collaborators and application teams to drive technology upgrade projects.
  • Designing or modifying technical solutions to tackle technology pain points
  • Take ownership for completing the IT change governance processes and deliver comprehensive IT documentation.

What we’re looking for:

  • Strong Design Engineering and/ or Software Architecture background and knowledge of agile development practices with a history of technical leadership
  • Experience across the entire SDLC from inception, through build to production
  • You appreciate and acknowledge the impact of system design decisions on scalability, resilience, and supportability
  • Ability to identify key project technology risks, and complete FMEA analysis.
  • Preferred hands-on developer experience building distributed event-driven applications using Java, Spring boot etc
  • Experience of API design and architecture patterns, messaging technologies (Kafka, MQ)
  • Ability to discuss low-level technical requirements and issues with the development teams
  • Knowledge of delivery of microservices to production
  • Exposure to Systems Thinking
  • Exposure to Docker and container orchestration tools e.g., Kubernetes
  • Knowledge in one or more of the following: API Economy; Big Data; Cloud/ Open Source; Automation/ Robotics; Blockchain

We’d welcome the following desirable skills and experience:

  • An understanding of any UK Domestic Payments (Cheques, Faster Payments, BACS).
  • Legal, Regulatory & Mandatory projects in Payments areas
